Engine numbers predate serial numbers - early vehicles used the enigne
number as vehicle identification (Maxwell, Ford,  etc.)

The B block engine number should be stamped on a machined pad on the
passenger side of the block, just below the cylinder head next to the
distributor base.

RB block engines have the machined pad on top of the block directly in front
of the intake valley pan, next to the distribuot base toward the driver's
side.

The standard engine in the 1964 Newport was the 361 V8.

  OK, help me out please. Found a 64 Newport in the boneyard. It has a
  big block. Of course I was hoping it was a 413 or 426. Only numbers I
  found were under the dist. on the pad, but it was just a bunch of
  letters and numbers, no recognizable  things like "383" or what have
  ya. When did they begin to stamp the engine number ? Darn its probably
  just a 361 or 383. Hoping I had found a diamond in the rough.
