I usually use a sharpie and mark where the washers are before I take the
hood off.  Then I can get it exactly the same as it was.  WHen I dont
have that, I usually start in the middle of the slot on both sided.  

This is probably in a book somewhere, but this is how I do it.

Tighten the front bolt first, then lift up on the hood and tighten the
second bolt.  

Slowly take the hood down and look for any contact points.  If there are
any adjust each side accordingy.  Do not let it drop closed as it can
chip your paint away.  

Once you get aligned side-side if it is riding too low by the
wind-shield, you can loosen the back bolt and let a little of the play
out that you propped into it by lifting the hood when you tightened it
the first time.  

If it is too high, loosen the front bolt and try to push down on the
hood.
