i had these symptoms on my 70 300 hurst. head lights would almost go dark at
idle with the brakes on.
real head scratcher.  turned out to be a bad ammeter.
this is shunt ammeter.  it would show that the system was charging, but it
wasn't sending a whole lot current thru.
i found and purchased a NOS ammeter on ebay and installed it.  the head
lights stay bright and don't wink with the turn signals any more.

dave grove on the mml has a way to repair these ammeters, maybe we can get
him to write a tech article.

but i would definitely check the ammeter as well as the other components of
the charging system.
