Re: Brake Drums

All I remember is what my grandfather told me.  He told me that Buick put large fins on all front drums of the 1966 (I think) cars.  He said they were aluminum drum with a cast iron liner as a braking surface.  He told me they were the best brakes he'd ever seen and they lasted nearly the life of the car as they cooled so well.  I think they dumped them in 1970.

I would put the ones with fins, more cooling is better with brakes.  I don't think the weight will make a big difference in the performance as the whole car is not that light.  On the other hand they are rear brakes you are talking about and only do about 30% of the stopping.  But that 30% running as cool as it can could make a big difference one day in how well you can stop that car.

Hi Bill,
I would go with the lighter drums as they will do the job, save unsprung weight ( which will improve ride comfort and handling ), and save you money. There are much improved linings available also which will increase stopping power.

I think the old saying "bigger is better" holds true when it comes to brakes.  Not sure if the finned brakes are really any better since the front brakes do most of the work.  I guess if you live in a very warm climate you might want to go with finned drums.  Just my two bits.

Subject: Brake Drums

I'm building a set of 11 inch rear drum brakes for my 65 Coronet from scratch. I have a pair of backing plates and building everything new from there, putting drums. My question is... is there any major advantage to a physically heavier finned drum vs physically lighter non-finned drum?

I would think the fans would be an advantage for cooling, but the non-finnef drum would be less weight on the wheels to get stopped.

The other issue here is the heavier drums are twice the price of the lighter drums. Both had the same 2 year warranty.

Any thoughts?

This is not some kind of a rally car, it's a cruiser.
