If you remove the carb and lift from there, you can actually pull both together without removing the hood. I dont even bother removing the hood anymore when I pull an engine.

It is hard to avoid scratching up against the firewall with the tailshaft housing and the top of the radiator support with the pan if pulling together from the top, if appearance of the paint is a consideration.
