You'll find some good tips on tapered axles and how to remove them. http://1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com/techstuff.html Yes, you can replace the drum to drum with a '65 or later "B" (to '72 I think -- check that). I'd keep the tapered as they are plenty strong; but since your setup is already a hybrid, then swapping to a later set up is logical. Or you can replace with a complete tapered drum-to-drum unit. You can usually find these for cheap or even free.
