I'm not positive, but I've been told that the Cometic gaskets have to be coated with anti-seize to make them work.
The anti-seize is supposed to make everything move/slide with thermal change.

Looks like .040" is a common thickness. So I'm not sure they would help you with compression.

I gotta say the steam cleaning sure spruced it up.

One picture shows the exhaust leak. This was spitting water because it was coming from the cylinder and not the bolt. After re-tightening the exhaust bolts this had stopped. I have found some exhaust bolts loosen after getting up to temp the first time. Even a ways down the road they may need tightening again.
