All Mopar trans buttons are connected to a mechanical linkage that acts like a column shifter. The mechanical linkage connects to the cable. Pushing a button thus moves cable the appropriate travel to shift the transmission. 

First, clean the PB unit to remove obvious crud. The Factory Service Manual instructs to lube the neutral slide, neutral slide pin and busing, cam pivot but does not say what lube to use. I guess something that does not attract dirt and dust over time. No mention is made of lube on other areas.
