Wiper linkage arm help

Hello guys
Could someone with a '63 dodge -single speed wiper motor
check the orientaion of the linkage arms.
the FSM shows the longer arm on the Driver side and they are stamped L & R
but yet i cannot seem to get them fitted properly this way 
(of course the dash is completely installed including heater-
It went together easily with the longer arm on the passenger side)
but when I activate the motor (which spins clockwise) the wipers head for the engine bay.
Any help muchly appreciated
