I had this issue a couple times. Back in the late 80s/early 90s when I had my first Mopar, a 74 Charger with a 440, the 727 went bad, so I had to have it rebuilt. After rebuilding it, I was told by the shop I'd need a kickdown, but wasn't told how badly I needed one (like, right then!), so I drove off oblivious. Yeah, that worked out great. I did drive it like that for quite a while shifting manually, but I didn't know much about cars then, so I'm sure the damage was done. The missing kickdown is probably why the trans died in the first place. I sold the car shortly thereafter due to a jumped timing chain. My next adventure was just a couple years ago. I took my AMC Concord to the dragstrip and, while working on the carb, took the kickdown off and forgot to hook it back up. The car ran great in the quarter, but when I drove down the street, I realized what had happened and hooked it back up. Then I noticed the trans would shift strange. Say the car was in first and was shifting into second. The car would go from first, then when it shifted, the RPMs would float up a little like you put the car in neutral for a quick second, then it shifted into second. Same thing when you went from 2nd to 3rd. I took it to my trans guy and had him check it out and put in a manual valve body at the same time. Now, no more kickdown! You will burn up the clutches from no fluid pressure. The kickdown provides pressure. You can wire it back and adjust it by the downshifts. Didnt it shift funny/early? If you have the pressure turned ALL the way up on the valve body you will be ok because it will conpensate for it. If you do this, turn the pressure all the way up, and the kickdown ever falls off, you wont burn it up. This does work, it did happen to me on my 440 Charger. Hook up somethingior use a manual valva body and you dont need any kickdown. > > --- On Mon, 1/10/11, Cory Rempel <cory_383@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > > > From: Cory Rempel <cory_383@xxxxxxxxxxx> > > Subject: Another tranny question > > To: 1962to1965mopars@xxxxxxxxxx > > Date: Monday, January 10, 2011, 9:26 PM > > > > > > > > Last year I replaced the 318 in my 65 Polara with a > > 440.
