Thanks Herb. I have some, but have not used it because I had "questions", all of which were answered in this article. /Butch ----- Original Message ----- From: "Herb" <zephyr9900@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: "1962 to 1965 Mopars" <1962to1965mopars@xxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, August 1, 2010 7:21:23 AM Subject: Re: Fickle headlights http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-dielectric-grease.htm this is a good explanation of dielectric grease. It comes in tubes an can be bought at any hardware store or electrical supply house. -------Original Message------- From: Herb Date: 7/31/2010 11:35:35 PM To: 1962 to 1965 Mopars Subject: Re: Fickle headlights First when they go out hit your dimmer switch a few times and see if that fixes them. Could be a bad connection at the floor switch or a bad dimmer switch. Next look at the wires in the block going through the fire wall. Always a week point, check for a hot or overheated wire or wires. Take apart/unplug and clean or replace terminals and coat with electrical grease & reassemble. Next check the light switch for bad or overheated connections If none, using a test light confirm all appropriate lugs are operational in the both positions. If not you have a bad switch at the dash Herb 1956 Plymouth Belvedere 361 1959 Coronet 326 Poly 1961 Belvedere Custom Suburban 318 Poly 1962 Dodge Dart 225 Slant Six 1963 Fury 2D/HT 6.1L 1963 Sport Fury Convertible 361 1999 Durango SLT 5.9L 2008 SRT-8 Magnum 6.1L St. Louis, MO. http://1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com/mmo42009.html -------Original Message------- From: Butch Edison Date: 7/31/2010 10:55:18 PM To: 1962to1965mopars@xxxxxxxxxx Subject: Fickle headlights I have a 64 Sport Fury at Lake Tahoe for the kickoff to Hot August Nights in Reno. Last night, while cruising, I noticed the headlights flickering, then we went into the hotel garage they went off entirely. Thought about it last night. This morning, I reached through the window and pulled the headlight switch, no key in the ignition. No headlights, but the tail lights and dash lights worked. This was important to me, because if it came right down to it, could I directly wire the headlights to the battery while cruising, then untie them when done? I'd still have tail and brake lights. Anyway, got in the car, started it up. Again I pulled the headlight switch to the ON position. No headlights. Turned away to talk to my wife, looked back, and had headlights. There seems to be nothing I can do to replicate this. Drove the same route today and tonight with headlights on, checked reflections in the bumpers in front of me, and they worked fine. Turned the switch on/off multiple times, used the dimmer switch repeatedly, no luck making them fail again. For what it's worth, I just did re-ground the headlights while I was cleaning up the metal in that area. Ground it down to bare metal, did the same to the ground wire, so if it's a bad ground, it's not there. What do you suspect? I'm thinking a broken or loose wire after the switch, somewhere between the switch and the lights? The switch itself? Could the dimmer switch be the culprit? This forum is the best at solving these problems so hope you will chime in.
