Re: A833 bearing retainers

Jeff,

There are two different bolt circle sizes available on the OD. Neither one will accommodate the 4.35 retainer as far as I remember due to the size of the bearing itself. You may be able to find a 4.80 retainer that will fit your OD trans(or have the OD retainer cut down to 4.80, as I have done in the past). Then you'd still need to have the bellhousing opened up to the 4.80 size to match. There isn't enough room to go all the way up to 5.09 size of the OD trans, I think.
If you go to 4.80 on the bellhousing and blow the OD unit up, you can still go back to the 4.35 unit using a spacer available from Lakewood.
A friend of mine and I tried to go through all the possible combinations using over a dozen different transmissions of all years and sizes. I can't remember all the variations we found.

Subject: A833 bearing retainers

Hey guys, I'm gettng ready to put an 833 OD into my 64 Polara to replace
the 833 already in there, which I think has the 4.3" retainer. What I'd
like to know is if the bolt circle on the OD trans bearing retainer,
which I think is 5.25", is the same as the bc on the 4.3" retainer. If
not, how hard would it be to drill/tap the front of the OD trans to fit
the 4.3" retainer? If I can't do that, then I'll have to have the bell
housing machined to fit the big br, and that would keep me from being
able to go back to the small br if I blow up the OD trans. Confused
now?? I am!
