Re: 727 to 4 speed

The linkage problems are next to naught. You can buy all the linkage parts. If you use a later bellhousing, you'll have to make a bracket to lign up the Z-bar or it will sit crooked. Any full length 4spd will work. The thing to be most careful of is shifter mounting locations as not all are drilled. You need the mount at the front of the tailshaft (e-bodies are at the rear). Using a 66-up 4spd will let you use your existing slip yoke driveshaft with no modifications (length is the same). It will also let you use the later style speedometer pinion, which can still be bought and has better range for tire sizes. You will have to buy a new cable for a 66-67 B-body, but they're cheap. The transmission mount and crossmember are supposed to be different, but you should be able to find a mount that works with your automatic crossmember once you start putting it together. The shifter is just a Hurst Competition Plus, which you can still buy new if you feel like spending a lot of money. There are plenty of used ones out there, and they can be rebuilt to get rid of slop. The handle is application specific for 64-65 B-bodies, as is the aluminum mount. You can get away with a later B-body mount or you can get a repop of the correct one from Passon. If you don't have a console, you can still buy the handle new and rather affordably. The console handles are on eBay from time to time.

Getting close to finishing the '65 Dart, and the '65 Coronet is calling to me. I am tossing around ideas for this winter's projects. Probably should get my 727 rebuilt and the 3800 convertor changed to something more streetable. Started thinking about changing over to a 4 speed. Just for conversation's sake, what year parts from the flywheel back, will work when changing an early "B" to a 4 speed? It seems that later model stuff is more readily available. I know that '62-'65 pedals are unique, but that's not much of an issue (I have a set). A hydraulic throwout bearing could eliminate a lot of the linkage problems.
