A spring is a good idea in the lower (suction) hose to prevent collapse at high RPM. I don't think it's necessary to have one up top.

I see GATES sells a molded upper radiator hose for Poly 318 (20416), but the part description says "Does Not Contain Spring". Isn't a spring needed to prevent hose collapse under adverse conditions?
