Bill,
The coolant passage is formed by a sand core inserted inside the mold of 
the casting before the molten metal is poured into the mold.  Sometimes 
wires or small rods are used to provide extra strength to the core to 
prevent warpage or broken cores during the casting process.  
Occasionally they don't get removed when the spent core is removed from 
the casting.  That's probably what you've found...Brian
