I agree that as long as the threads are not in the aluminum, it shouldn't
matter. The torque specification is based on the material in which the
threads are cut and the size of the threads (3/8" UNC can take more than
5/16" UNC, etc). There's a table somewhere of appropriate limits, often
found in the back of engine building books. If you're really worried, use
studs.

I am installing an aluminum intake and water pump and housing on my 413.
I'm assuming the factory specified torque for the carb mounting studs,
water neck and pump to housing bolts will be too high for the aluminum
parts. How much should I back off the torque to avoid stripping out the
holes? Is there a good rule of thumb?
