Convertible Question

Hi folks,

I have been working on my wife's Polara 500 ragtop and have a question.  
I want to remove the trim clips and in the trunkn is a plate that seems 
to be some sort of brace that is bolted to the rear of the wheel wells.  
I want to know if the brace can be removed so I can get at the rear of 
the nylon trim clips and drive out the locking pins.

What does the brace do and where is it connected at the front?

Can it be removed or is it welded at the front somehow.

I may have seen these on a 63 440 hardtop too.

Please help if you can.
