Sticking trans pushbuttons

Hi all

After a bit of advice from Gary, Rich & Schuyler, we had a go at removing the pushbutton assembly from the dash last weekend, to try and give the mechanism a good old lube-job. Could have just tried to lube it from the front or up behind (!), but decided to go the whole hog and take the assembly out to see what's restricting the buttons.

Didn't get quite as far as hoped, mainly because we couldn't detach the cables from the assembly. See pics in this link:

It looks like someone's crimped the open ends of the cable retaining brackets, probably to stop the cables lifting out when in use. Anyone else out there with the pushbutton trans seen this kind of thing before?

The other query at this stage is:
Having taken the pushbuttons off the levers, it's very hard to depress the levers to see if there's any restrictions there. We're not sure if it's because, without the buttons, there's very little to push on, or if it's because there is something sticking in the assembly.
Does anyone know if the levers should move freely with the cables still attached, but the buttons removed?

Going to have another look tomorrow so any suggestions gratefully received!

Thanks

Robert
