Push Button probs

Hi guys

Happy New Year everyone! Sorry, I think I forgot to say that before!

A bit more help please...
Since getting the car back on the road, we've been having a spot of bother with the trans push buttons sticking.
It started on the first trip out (back in September), with the fresh engine & trans back in the car. We stopped after a couple of miles to change drivers, then couldn't get the drive button to engage. The neutral was pushed in, but the drive button wouldn't depress far enough to engage and flick the neutral button back out. Well, it was being pushed in far enough, it just wouldn't do that last little bit to change gear!
We eventually got it into drive, then back at the garage squirted some lubricant (cant remember what type) onto the rear of the mechanism up under the dash. A few more goes on the buttons got them all working again, so we were satisfied that all it needed after a year sitting idle was a bit of lube & a bit of use.

Since then, though, it has got stuck again, mostly at the start of a journey, when it's cold, but also occasionally after a long journey. It does seem to be just going from drive to neutral.

Has anyone else had problems like this? I'm not sure if it is just the mechanism up behind the dash, or whether it could be somewhere else between the pushbutton and the trans itself.

We did have the trans rebuilt while the engine was being done, and I cant recall having these problems (to this extent) before the trans was fixed, but they were never that easy to use. So maybe it is related to the work done on the trans, or maybe it's just that it needs more use to free itself up?

As it is now tho, I struggle to see how anyone could ever use the pushbuttons on the strip! And as that's what we hope to do in a few months time, I'd appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks

Robert
