My memory is that the primary differences had to do with the type of lockout mechanism itself as opposed to the external levers. It has been a while since I messed with those old 833's, so I may be forgetting some things. I also believe that the shift forks and some other related parts were changed at about the same time. I think the changes happened between 1969 and 1970. Just remember that Mother Mopar didn't have much respect for model year boundaries when it came to parts introduction. My take would be to find a complete early model side cover with levers and forks and put it in your late model trans. I think the aerly setup was considered better than the new one, anyway. As I'm sure you know, the additional holes in the levers will alter the distance the shifting mechanism moves the the sliding gears for a given distance of shifter movement. It is important to have everything just right to prevent engaging more than one gear at the same time.
