I'd first try a new ballast resistor, then ignition box (you can get a cheap one off the parts store shelf just for the sake of testing to see if yours is bad), then coil (they do get hot, I don't know how accurate your hand thermometer is). If none of that fixes it, try a new pickup in the distributor. Are you running the early style alternator (points regulator) or do you have an electronically regulated charging system? Supposedly the electronic ignition won't last with the old school regulators.
