The gaskets block off the heat crossover, keeping your intake charge cool.
This is generally regarded as a performance gain.

recently bought what was represented to be an M1 alum intake for RB engines
for the 426 W. It has "mopar" cast into the front runner with P4532060
stamped on the carb base. I took the old cast iron manifold off - and guess
what? The new one is not wide enough by about 3/4 inch. Each side fits
nicely to the head, but not both at the same time. Also, the new gasket
(fiber) only has the intake ports open. The old one is steel and is one
piece with the vally cover and has a middle opening for the carb choke (?).
Any ideas of what I have and what I need to get to correctly fit will be
appreciated. The 426 is a warranty replacement engine in a 65 Sport Fury.
Thanks,

one of the bellhousing bolts won't match up with the nerwer style trans. I
wan't to use a manual trans, and am wondering if I should use a 62-65 trans
aswell as the poly 318.
