We used to stop at a gas station in Scotts Valley on our way to Santa Cruz (CA). The pump had a big crank on the side with about a fifteen gallon glass jar on top of the pump. You crank the handle and gas would flow into the jar and you would stop when the gas level indicated how much gas you wanted, then you go into the little gas station and pay for the amount of gas that was in the jar. There was no provision for the dollar amount per gallon on the pump. You just paid based on the gas level in the jar. Then you squeezed the trigger on the pump hose handle and the gas would gravity-flow into your car’s tank from the jar. I guess the price per gallon was at the discretion of the old guy behind the counter. “Now some folks say it’s too big and that it uses too much gas.
