--Many older pumps had to be scrapped as they could not register any price over $.999. To get by, some were programmed for half price then doubled at the cash register. What’s a cash register grandpa?
I began pumping gas in Des Moines circa 1955 when Phillips leaded (OMG) regular was $0.309/G. and “Flite Fuel” with even more tetraethyl lead (OMG OMG) was $0.349/G. “Buck cheap” got the customer three gallons, windshield wiped inside and out, tires aired up and the floor mats vacuumed. For maybe a nickel less, one got “cut rate” gas and got about four gallons and maybe a windshield washed with a dirty “shammy”.
Me, I got that buck for an hour’s work. Learned a lot about ‘40’s & ‘50’s cars—and the Good, the Bad and the Ugly drivers. A cheap education. Every teen should have to face the public and learn how to get up, get clean, get dressed, get fed and get to work early. Glad kids no longer have to inhale gasoline fumes while filling the tank or inhale the asbestos clouds associate with brake jobs.

WOWIE!!!
My first car was a ‘75 Toyota Corona — and it was a HUGE deal when gas hit $1! Now look at it. Crazy!

After my senior year in high school in 1968, I worked part-time at a summer job at a local cut-rate gas station (Red Head) and pumped many a gallon of regular gas at 26 and 27 cents/gallon. Keep in mind that it was full service and we cleaned windshields, checked oil, and put air in tires at the customer's request. We all gave away stamps or glasses at those prices! Going back to the late 1950's, I remember my Dad filling up our 1956 Buick Century (7 MPG highway/5 MPG city) at a cut-rate gas station in our area with prices of 17.9 cents/gallon.

19 cents! in 1954. I had a buddy who had a 1930 Ford model A and we would mix gas and Kerosine 50/50 to get more miles of fun. Had to put the bumper against a tree to stall it, key would not turn it off.
My first car was a 1933 Chevy coupe, which I ran with the hood off and painted on whitewalls.
I smoked then and a pack of cigarettes was 20 cents.
