After my senior year in high school in 1968, I worked part-time at a summer job at a local cut-rate gas station (Red Head) and pumped many a gallon of regular gas at 26 and 27 cents/gallon.  Keep in mind that it was full service and we cleaned windshields, checked oil, and put air in tires at the customer's request.  We all gave away stamps or glasses at those prices!  Going back to the late 1950's, I remember my Dad filling up our 1956 Buick Century (7 MPG highway/5 MPG city) at a cut-rate gas station in our area with prices of 17.9 cents/gallon.
