Re: {Chrysler 300} slippage in radio tuning - An easy cure

hi ,
the search tune never really works right , unfortunately.
And the motor reversing switch always fails by breaking off a contact, or the little piece of phenolic in it dries out and crumbles .
This one ( dormant 20+ years)searched 3 x and then that motor switch failed right on the bench . , pile of little bits under it
I once made an electronic flip flop circuit to reverse the motor ( lot of time and effort ) with a relay , that part of it worked , but ability to stop on stations was just plain marginal , unless 5 miles from station . Tubes are almost never bad.. this one had originals all perfect.

The last 3-4 i just disconnect the initiating motor switch wire selection at front switch, — as when motor wont go , and someone pushes local or dist switch it locks into search mode but it cant search , —- only way to unlock that is turn it off and on again . Also electric clutch fails , motor spins , no drive .

The 7 button radio itself is terrific, very surprised and pleased that57 by Philco was hand wired no pc card . Later with pc card( 300F) the traces lift with any heat , makes repair very difficult sometimes impossible .
So , ymmv, —- but to me having a really good am radio without power tune that does not lock itself up is better than alternative .

I once fixed a delco search tune in a 60 buick convert I have — they work a lot better on search tune . No motor , a spring pulls it , solenoid resets it

7 button is a much better radio inside than 5 button , FYI , especially the one with two output transistors . By the way you can buy them again , 2N401 , sometimes have to mess with bias resistors . ( too long for here) .

The one I am working on ( early C ) has a one transistor output , power tune , never saw that before . Transistor was bad .

I may put something up on disabling that power tune lock in .. not advocating , just a choice to make
I know how you feel ,— it becomes an aggravation rather than feature , especially once complicated “ flip over” motor reversing switch fails
And for sure it will ..
I admit that decision driven by hassle to get the radio out of an F (!) yet again !
