I was over the moon with joy/fear/trepidation/excitement in 1986 as a 31 year old taking the plunge into Letter Car ownership with the purchase of an A/C equipped 25 year old G coupe while on a business trip in Denver. I was so nervous about driving it back to the Boston area that I broke the oil dipstick from checking it so often to make sure I wouldn't run the motor out of oil! ;-) At the time I really didn't believe it was actually happening that I'd realize the dream of owning a real letter car. At the time my wife was driving a 62 Sport and I had a 61 Newport for a total investment of $900.00, and here I was spending $6000 on a beautiful G coupe being offered for sale by the past president of the 'Western Club'. (VIN ending in 17087 if the current owner is reading). The equivalent today would be a 30 something acquiring a late 90's Camaro, Trans/Am, Mustang, or JDM or German hot rod they couldn't afford when they were new. The local 'Mopar clubs' in my area are mainly populated with cars from this century, starting around 2005 with 300's and Magnums, then later Chargers and Challengers. The southern/Texas chapter of the W.P.C. club has been inactive for years. I was at a model railroad show last weekend and met a former president of the 'southern region' of the 300 Club Inc back when they had separate regions. He used to own a 300F, but sold it years ago as he got older and wasn't able to work on it anymore.

Times change, tastes change. The good news for most of us is that we have these cars because they are our favorites, not because they represent our IRA/retirement funds or anyone else's taste in fine automobiles. They may have fallen out of favor with investors/speculators/flippers, but that doesn't mean they won't find their way back again sometime in the future.

For some time now the hobby has become (for me) more about the people than the cars. When we congregate at a show or cruise, we are more likely to talk about family, friends, or health than the latest modification we made to our cars, and that's ok.

However the other thing going on is the waning interest in Chrysler letter cars. 20 years ago these were $150,000 cars but the hobby and tastes have moved on to later cars.

I do my best to solicit interest among younger car show attendees. Every young man that comes to my house to fix or maintain anything is given a free tour of my garage. Some are mildly interested or polite. Others are gobsmacked. We have to keep this up.
