RE: {Chrysler 300} Brake component/kit supplier

It should be noted that just because a part is made in China doesn’t mean that it’s automatically bad. Most of what we buy now, no matter how ‘American’ the name, is made in China. The US Military has vendors based in China. The difference is quality control. I’d like to believe that well-known brands, like Raybestos or Centric, do frequent quality control checks, or have their own inspectors on-site. The problem arises when no-name parts are purchased from suppliers like Kanters. They just buy the cheapest parts and resell at a substantial markup. Then it becomes a real crap shoot.

Hi Kurt,

Rock Auto should have what you need.  Ok to mix brands.  NAPA parts are just private labeled versions of the same parts at twice or more the cost.  10 or more years ago many of these parts were still made in the USA (or maybe Mexico), but now even previously high quality brands like Raybestos are almost all Chinese (maybe a little still from Mexico).  Centric brake parts have been Chinese made for 20+ years.  Also the fittings are now all metric - wheel cylinders, master, etc.  The cap on the master cylinder should be secured with a 7/16" hex head bolt - nope - now you'll find 10mm.  Just went thorugh this discovery last fall on my G.  Stongly advise utilization of silicone (DOT5), discussed and debated often on this list server.  But even with DOT5, expect a Chinese made master cylinder to start leaking brake fluid anywhere from 6 mos. to 3 years after installation.  USA made masters installed 20+ years ago with DOT5 = zero leaks.  Just the sad state of affairs these days.

Dear Club Members -

I'm would appreciate any/all recommendations on good brake part suppliers for our beloved Letter Cars including period Imperials.  I've had generally good experiences with Rock Auto (good parts, reasonable prices, excellent communication/order completion/prompt shipping), and I see that they offer individual components and hardware kits - ideally, I'd like to go to a single provider to support a general overhaul.  I recently purchased a '64 Imperial Crown Coupe and it is a wonderful driver (after about 6 months of sorting); however, anything requiring a moderate-effort stop gets downright scary...pulsing, a bit of pull, and some time-to-time variability.  Car sat for 20+ years before recommissioning.

Thanks in advance - have a great weekend!

Kurt
