Dan et al,
Was the sticker actually on your F's door jam before you had Gary reproduce it or did you find one from a car with captive air tires ?
The sticker reads you have no requirement for a spare tire. If that is true, why are there spare
tires in the trunk of all these cars with "Blue Streaks"?
I do know that with my '61 NYer wagon, it was an option to order with captive airs and as such, did not require a spare tire. As such, I have that sticker reproduced by Gary on the door jam of my wagon.
A 1956 advertisement, I think by Good Year, touts a '56 Plymouth wagon driving from Boston to New York on
4 "flat" tires where the outer chamber was punctured and deflated and the innner, steel belted liner carried the car safely to NY demonstrating you did not need a spare to get safely to a destination for service.
A tire with the captive air port on the sidewall, could be run without an inner steel belt liner found in "Captive Air" tires. This is documented with the attached picture that reads; "Sidewall valve for optional use with
Captive - Air Safety shield." I got this picture from a 300 Club member that had a 300H with original tires.
(Sorry but I can't recall his name and I think he sold the car and is no longer a member).
Marshall Larson's picture(s) of his original Blue Streaks (sidewalls) that he may post later may help verify my picture.
I once heard that the tires on the Letter cars so equipped with Blue Streaks, that the blue air "port" on the sidewall made a blue streak around the tire when the tire rotated at high speed.
My conclusion is that cars equipped with these Good Year tires with a sidewall port, were Captive Air tires without the inner liner steel "safety shield" found in fully Captive Air tires. I don't ever remember seeing in print from factory literature, (not a classified ad) that Captive Air tires were an option on the Letter cars but maybe they could be ordered if requested by buyer. Maybe someone can prove me wrong and it was an option.
Best to all,
John Cote
