No one has said, put the car in warm sun so rubber softens
before removal. Put the cleaned and conditioned seal in the sun for a few hours
before install.

My
rubbers are in fairly good condition, the car had been stored in a shed for
35-40 years.
Thank you to everyone
helping with great feedback – very apricated.

I am not sure what
present condition your ‘57 rubber gaskets are in, but this method worked
extremely well on my ‘64.
If yours are
cracked, I would search for another.
Rub some hand
cleaner with lanolin on in situ and let it soak overnight. Keep it wet. It will
soften the flap and help lube the plastic tool to open the flap up. The lanolin
will recondition and soften the rubber to open the lock, and release the tension
so you can get some hand cleaner between the glass and the gasket for easier
removal.
And when removed, it
will then clean all of the cement off. Over time!
Best to let the
gasket soak with copious hand cleaner in a large bag to keep it wet for I would
say a week. Keep rubbing fresh hand cleaner over it especially where the
old glue remains. Get two tubs at least.
The glass shop
didn’t want my car sitting for that long so I rushed mine and the cement was
harder to get off with plastic scrapers and dull
screwdrivers.
But by the third day
it came out like new! Very pliable and no residue.
Don’t rush it. Soak
it!

Supposedly it's the
lanolin in the original Go-Jo formula that is doing the softening of the rubber.
I've never tried it myself but know a lot of people use it for
that.
I’ve heard of Glycerin used as such. Silicone is easy
to come by, but use what you can lay your hands on.
Danny Plotkin
What you say about Glycerine? is popular here in
Sweden for softening up rubber. I used Pratts glycerine for softening my 60Des
& friends 300k original front windshield rubber.. i hang it up in the
garage for a few days....it made the rubber way more flexible......when we set
the glass we only used simple Vaseline for the mounting
process..
it worked fine for us no hocus pucus at
all...
Take your time 2pers better than
one!

I have salvaged several W/S gaskets using Go-Jo
habd cleaner.
Several containers and flat shallow tray of sorts to
soak them in while massaging the stuff in and around.
Hell of a messy job but worked out well for
me.
Not sure that prevents the damage Ron .
Just use soap as lubricant ?
John
(and others) -
The
WD-40 is only used to make the rubber slippery so that the windshield will
slide out. After it is removed, the gasket is immediately cleaned, probably
with dish soap, and the channels are hand dried.

I’d avoid hydrocarbon “ lubricants” on
the rubber - like WD40 , as they will destroy it long term
I believe professional installers use
soap based lubricants , “soapy water “ etc .
Silicone is probably best fur rubber it
preserves it but it gets everywhere , a mess on paint . Does not hurt paint
but can’t get it off
John
First
thing is to gain a thorough understanding of how the rubber locks by
folding into itself. You need to unlock it with a nylon drift. Never use a
metal tool. Everything, including the seal-to-gasket area, should be
soaked in a slippery penetrant, like WD-40 or PB Blaster. Once you get it
unlocked, use the drift to wiggle the glass loose from the gasket. Every
area of the glass must be free from the gasket. Then begin to push from
the lower third of the glass, where it begins to curve. Just light pushes
as it begins to release. It will free up and pop out.
Be
sure to read the shop manual for additional instructions. When
reinstalling, start from the top edge then the sides, and finally the
bottom. Use the nylon drift to help you out. This is a two person job,
BTW.
Again,
DO NOT cut the gasket.

Hi
Ron,
I
haven’t removed the glass yet, I need to do some slight rust repairs
around the rear screen. I’m concerned with getting the glass out without
breaking the glass so thought I would cut the rubber.
The
front shield I wanted to clean up the edges for painting, but I think I
will leave it alone after hearing that.
Any
hints on removing rear glass?
Wayne
Here's
the deal: You can't. They are not reproduced. The repro stuff you see from
'major vendors' is junk. It's generic and doesn't work. If yours is in
fairly good shape, recondition it. If someone along the way expedited
glass removal by cutting the rubber, that was a major mistake. So here's
what can be done: For the windshield, understand that it's a W451, which
means that any Mopar 2dr hardtop or 4dr hardtop from 1957, except
Imperial, also uses the same gasket. Also, 1958 Plymouth hardtops retained
the W451 windshield while the other makes went to the later W453. So you
have to get one from a parts car. Regarding the rear glass, any senior
model 2dr HT that has the large rear window will use the gasket that you
need.
Are
these very desirable candidates for reproduction ? YES !
