The plates did come loose and fall off depending on how much rust was there to attack the tack welds (speaking from experience on the '62 Newport 300,00 mile workhorse we owned). If this car restoration involved down to frame restoration, the tag may well have fallen off or been taken off to preserve it.  The club does have a slight owner history of this 300 up until 2012.  

Anyone thinking of buying a 300 should contact the club for any known information.  It's what we're all about - helping each other out.  We may have past owner information and we do have Microfilm showing you how the car came from the factory.  Was it really a red 300D convertible or did it start life out as a white one?  We have the answer.

I don't know how many people purposely remove the VIN tag when restoring a car or if it just came loose. If mine were loose, I'd be putting some rivets on it.

However Vin tag monkey business can and often does detract from value, raise questions and is often illegal. Thank goodness we don't live in the Corvette world! If our club was like that, I wouldn't be a member.
