In “boatspeak” $1000 = one unit. As in, “that bottom paint removal was about 3 units, right?” A unit is a very appropriate term for my other passion: 300’s.
“Units” and my fortunate ability to underwrite them, is a very reasonable price to pay to have become a priviged 300 Museum Curator.
Especially my “new” 300 F courtesy of Love; and of course Terry McTaggart and George Richl who brought him Florida plate XNR300, into tip top shape. My 63’ 300 Pace Car is about to be released with new engine paint, Hansen AC, new top, well and boot. I can barely wait to get it on the road again after a year.
I drive them. That is the reason they were built.
My grandkids will drive these cars, and my sons-in-law will, I’m sure, be thrilled to house them until they can do so in 15-20 years. They’re in the will. Their future is assured. You can do a 100 point restoration. Or
not.
You can build a nice driver. Or not.
You can restore one component at a time over a number
of years. Or not.
You can do a budget restoration and then drive the
wheels off of it. Or not.
You can just let it sit in a barn and tell everyone
that you'll get to it eventually. Or not.
There are no right or wrong
answers.

A boat is a just hole in the water you throw money into.
I have some cars that really aren't worth spending the money to restore as
I could spend less buying the same car done but I still keep them. Heck, I just
bought a 60 Imperial that only cost 5 grand but the paint job and chrome work
would put me upside-down.
In
my restoration of a similar car, the point for me was to have a project/hobby
for fun and the challenge, not necessarily a financial reward. I wanted
to do the work, but drew the line at bodywork and paint because I know my
limits. Hobbies usually cost money – so what if it makes you
happy? Don’t they say the experience of people who own sailing boats is
like standing in a shower tearing up dollar bills?
Cheers
