RE: {Chrysler 300} Torsion Bars

I broke a T-Bar on my first new car—a ’61 Valiant 2DHT.  Just backing out of a parling place and less than two years old.  Failure analysis indicated something had hit the T-Bar hard enough to knock the coating off and nick the steel.  Corrosion followed, formed a stress concentration and initiated a lovely torsional failure with the classic progression of the failure obvious.  I reached under, puled both ends out , went to the event and thence to the dealer for a new bar under warranty.  Disappointing failure but understandable.  Lesson: Clean and inspect the T-Bars coating and patch if missing.  If corrosion or surface damage to the steel is spotted, replace.

Yes. What Don said.

Chrysler discovered this issue mid-57 model year. They sold a makeshift pair of foam rubber seals with a nylon tie to seal up the ends, after greasing, until they could release the boot Don mentions. I have a Plymouth TSB that describes this, as well as a pair of the seals with tie in the original box.

When the 57's came out they had no boot on the cross member end, so debris would get in there and rust out the bar, especially in the snow belt states. 58 put a boot in and you greased the ends also. Myself, I've never had one break
