Hello Rob,
Welcome to our 300 Club, and congratulations on your beautiful new Radiant Red E!--
I suggest calling our E model year consultant, Bob Brown. Bob’s not on this list server, so isn’t seeing your email. He does own a couple Es, so can hopefully offer you some helpful advice.
I will add that, if your E’s speedo needle is bouncing around while driving, in conjunction with the noise you’re hearing, you may risk snapping the speedo cable, plastic speedo gear in your trans, or something in the speedo itself. Lubricating the tiny wick, as Lindsey and Dan recommend, is good advice, as is following up with lubricating the speedo cable itself, if needed, as Dave recommends.

Josh, there is a product called Chain Life (also for cables), brand name, Champions Choice. It is a foaming lube (aerosol), that clings under severe pressures. Internet search brings up several brands. I suspect private label packaging by Champions Choice. Some are called chain/cable lube. Everyone should have a can on the shelf.
Another point about speedo lubing. On the back of speedo where cable attaches, there is a small lube cap that is knurled to grip and unscrew. You have to grip with pliers to get it unscrewed. It is vertical and hard to get at (get a light and crawl in), with speedo in dash. inside that small cylindrical cap there is a felt wick that dried out years ago. It is essential to remove the wick and soak in light oil (10 w, 3 in One, etc.), and a couple of drops in the opening where wick was removed. This lubes the shaft going into the mechanism. A must do.

A nice feature of our email list server is the ability to review prior emails by clicking on the 'archives' link found near the bottom of each of our Club's emails, then type in your search topic.

Someone else will be able to give you more precise pics and info, mine is in cold storage. I would have a look under the dash, not easy to get there. There is a fitting/screw where the cable goes into the speedo. There is a wick in there that needs some light oil on it. Maybe the easy fix. ( how flexible are you? ). I took my seat out to get in there a bit easier? If not, then you are onto lubing the speedo cable itself where others are better to advise. I’m sure you will enjoy driving the dar and welcome to the club.Lindsey Fuller in Winnipeg canada.

I am new to this group, Just bought a 1959 300 E (Radiant Red) in very good condition-it came from Portland Oregon( the car now resides in my garage in Salem Massachusetts). It was owned by a fellow out in Portland forclose to 40 years…his name was Robert Winkler. I was told by thedealer I bought it from it sat for about 10 years and was not driven. They worked to get it into pretty good shape. Engine runs and starts well. When I get over 20 mph there is a whiling noise coming from what I thinkmay be the speedometer cable. I have only driven the car 4 times (still enter here)and each time I drive it I think the sound is a bit less. Can anyone tell me how to to lubricate this speedometer cable?
