Re: {Chrysler 300} 1960 Chrysler drain tubes

My F #150183 had scheduled build date of 5/5/60 and ship date of 5/13/60,to Walnut Creek CA.

It does not have the 2 lower trunk drain tubes. However, when it was color changed from PP1 Toreador Red to its current (non-Chrysler) bright white 35+ years ago in California, 2 notches were imprinted into the rear panel, as you can see in the attached photo. When I purchased the car in '05, and took it to a local body shop to have the trunk weatherstripping area cleaned up and repainted, I told the body guy I wanted those notches removed, as they were not 'factory.' He insisted that they were too perfect, and had to be factory, so I lost that battle and they're still on the car. Several years ago, Gil Cunningham confirmed that I was correct, and that Chrysler never 'notched' the rear panel below the deck lid.

The F coupes owned by my 2 local buddies - Dave Kirkel #111166 (early build), and Frank Troost #155920 (late build) - do not have the drain tubes. Also, Frank's '61 NYer convertible, fitted with the toilet seat decklid, does not have the drain holes - though that decklid may well have been added when that car was restored years ago.

Also, re the small hose that drains the 2 toilet seat hubcap holes, it works ok if, every so often, you blow through it at the rear. Some folks chuckle at the sight of this when I do it at a car cruise.

This is about those rubber drain tubes that
drain the trunk lip. They run down inside the trunk
and out through the trunk floor.
I have one F with them and one F without them.
The car without tubes has a May 13 build date.
The car with tubes has a March 30 build date
so it isn't one of those "early build
versus late build" explanations.

I wonder if 1960 NYr or Windsors got drain tubes?
What about 1961? Same trunk design, but I've
never seen a 61 with them. Have you?

You could let me know if your F has them and
your build date and I'll make a table. Maybe there
is logic, maybe not.

By the way, has anyone ever checked to see if these things
actually work? I think the diameter of
these tubes is too small. The last time I washed
the car water sat on top of the tubes.
I also see standing water in the deck lid wheel cover
after rain or washing which tells me
the drain tube there is again too small.
I'm not suggesting we drill bigger holes
and install bigger tubes, just saying
I think drains might have been a good idea
that maybe didn't work in practice.
