RE: {Chrysler 300} 300 K Bendix booster

I got out and quickly attached the master to the booster and went for a spin after removing that foam filter.

Brakes work good now! I still feel the slop in the front rod. Will adjust when tool gets here-next week!

Here is a picture of the foam I removed from the push rod flange. When I held this in my hand and blocked the hole with my pinky, it was hard to blow through this! It packed down pretty tightly. I don’t know if this is the latest thing supplied in a rebuild kit. The Corvette guys still sell the Bendix scotch brite filters and the smaller boot.

Here also is a pic of the booster when I first removed it. Is this a 64 booster, or a later style bellows on perhaps a previously replaced booster? Not in the parts book! The filter is under the head of the bellows and not in the can.

My K is the 360HP single carb. The Bendix is in the 64 manual and is listed in the parts book for the VC2.

I have drums and converted to a dual drum brake master cylinder.

I have tested the console vacuum gauge and it reads 2”-4” less than my vac hand pump.

I have a gap in the push pin to the master. I did provide the rebuilder with the master when I took the booster in. Here we go again! I have ordered an adjuster tool used on Corvette Bendix boosters.

I have also removed a thick restrictive 1” thick foam “filter” inside that was under the bellows filter. Will let everyone know on that one.

I have a lot more questions than I have answers at this point.

The 1964 Chrysler came with either a Midland Ross or Kelsey Hayes power brake booster from the factory.  Having a Bendix booster is different and begs the question, why the change?

Are you still running OEM four wheel drum brakes or has a front disc conversion occurred?  Disc brakes take a lot more pedal effort than drums.

Having the full story would help.

Need some input. I had my Bendix brake booster rebuilt and upon my recent maiden voyage, I didn’t feel any power assist on the brakes.

What vacuum level should I expect on my 360HP 300K? The gauge is showing 14 and it dropped when I applied the brakes. All new vac lines and all new brake system. With the worn cam chain, I pulled 140-150 compression when I first got the car.

I took the booster back to the rebuilder today, this for the third and he showed me it was holding  vacuum at 25 on his bench. He tells me I need 19 for the booster to work!

Joy, rapture! Any experiences to share?

With the K cam, is 14 typical? It’s in the normal green zone! If this is too low, now thinking through this, I fear that when I had my damper rebuilt at the cam chain process, they may have gotten the TDC mark off.
