Re: {Chrysler 300} 300 G

ps-The garage I deal with here in Morgan Hill Ca is County Automotive. The owner (Smitty)at the time had run the place since the 50’s and was a serious enthusiast. His shop was voted one ot the top in our county a few years ago. He was known for doing things right but not cheap. His mechanics were all salaried and career professionals. When I talked to Smittyt about my steering box, he warned me that over his years of dealing with boxes, he had had a lot of boxes comeback not centered and too tight or too loose. He had his pet place to do steering boxes because they always throughly tested them and centered them before shipping. I am sure that any of the places suggested will be equally as good. Guys like Smitty can't afford to eat the labor of a warranty removal and repair of a box because the vendor did something wrong.

John, I agree. After replacing the center link and other "wearable” front suspension parts, I had the steering box R&R’d and sent to a place in LA (I live in San Jose) who rebuilt it.
They tested it and sent it back centered exactly. Centering the steering after a rebuild or new gaskets in/on the servo valve can be dangerous if you don't expect the steering wheel to violently spin to where the valve has been set as centered.)
I talked to my local garage I do business with and the owner allowed me a corner grease rack to be tied up for nearly a month to remove the box, send it down to LA, wait for it to come back, and reinstall it. Meanwhile I obtainined new rubber boot for the column/firewall from Gary Goers and also made new horn contacts from bronze sheet metal (probably sheet metal). My 300H had well over 300,000 miles on it. Hopefully you won't have to get into the steering box.
All in, I think I paid just over $1000 including the box rebuilding and the labor to R&R the box and install the new boot etc, and use of the grease rack for a month.
Welcome to the club. Great people who can help you if you need it.

Good Luck!

You want the most caster you can get, as that will give you the best possible handling with radial tires. In other words, emphasize maximum caster first, then camber and toe-in. If you don't have a factory service manual, you need to get one, for '61 you'll need the '60 and '61 supplement, they work as a set.
