Re: {Chrysler 300} Bud Faubel Article

To Andy & All,

Andy may be correct in his assessment that Bud Faubel did not race “Big Red” in the February, 1961 Daytona speed trials.

I look forward to his upcoming article.

I dug out all the reference material that Bud Faubel gave me when I interviewed him. I am sending Andy the material. Hopefully it will be of some further help to him.

There are contemporaneous articles and other documentation.

I think that the attached Cars magazine article from May, 1962 would be of particular interest to the group. The article shows “Big Red” on the beach at Daytona.

The article can be viewed online thru the following link:

Also attached is the Affidavit that Bud Faubel signed in reference to “Big Red”.

You are missing my point. I am not saying Bud Faubel did not say those things. He did. What I am saying is he mixed up cars and years while recalling events 50 plus years in the past. The 1961 Daytona Beach Class 8 speeds cited, the windshield trim incident, happened with Faubel’s 1961 300-G Gran Turismo. This was not in question before Faubel was interviewed about the newly-found “Big Red” around the 2010s. That 1962 non-letter 300 car was not at Daytona in 1961. Even if it somehow existed, the rules did not provide for “mutant” cars. The 1961 Beach Trials program cites: “Eligible Cars - Standard production 1961 American-made automobiles in record runs; all other cars run in Century Club class.” There was an Experimental class, but that was different (i.e. Granatelli’s supercharged 300-F)

Additionally, Faubel had a 1961 Dodge at the 1961 Daytona Beach Trials which he ran in Class 7.

I don’t want to freak anybody out over photos and attachments with this email, so I’ll run the full story in the Club News.

From the Mopar Hall of Fame:

In 1961, at Chrysler's request, he brought an experimental 1961/1962 mutant Chrysler 300G to Daytona for the Pure Oil time trials and astonished everyone with the big car's capabilities.

Here is Bud Faubel’s obituary:

It states:

“Bud also raced cars, starting with junkers from his father's garage in Chambersburg. He went on to drag racing and circuit racing for NRA and NASCAR, winning the Daytona race in 1961 with "Big Red The Honker".”

1961 was the last year for the Daytona beach races.

Unfortunately Bud Faubel’s recollections are not historically accurate and this is not the only case. The “Big Red” 1962 car was not at Daytona in 1961, it wasn’t built yet. It was indeed at Daytona in 1962 - I personally know who drove it there for Bud - but it was never on the sand because the Flying/Standing Mile events were no longer.

NASCAR records and period event coverage confirm Bud’s 156+mph Flying Mile one-way run and 90.7 Standing Start Mile (average speed over a mile) record run were in the white 300-G. We have photos, a VIN, and a car.

Hi To All,

I had the privilege and honor to interview Bud Faubel for the attached article prior to his death.

He said that he still owes Chrysler a dollar for “Big Red”.
