Re: [Chrysler300] Powersteering fluid

Agree totally with Marshall . If you put atf in small cans and get 4 x as much per oz. you have a way to get a Big Mac .
Even further , i once got into what is in the 10w special oil once used in all those semi automatic mopar transmissions ? Turns out nothing . It is 10 w oil . That was the first atf, but you can make more $ by dying it red and calling it “ special atf” .
Also one notes the relatively sudden switch among drag racers  from “transmission gear oil” in manual trans to using atf now —“  for better shifts” in say a T10 GM 4 speed . Makes sense to me . Mercedes stick I had (ZF) came with light oil . Early 80’s.

One thing that is true and we covered before at some point is that new very expensive mopar synthetic atf “ good for  life of  car  “   are factuality better — as they will flow freely at much lower temps — which really matters when you have a  very fine filter mesh in the trans , apparently part of the lifetime sealed concept . Early TF have a rather crude metal mesh , so not bothered too much by thick oil .but such thick oil when cold might not make it though a modern filter . 727 filter may be in between. Old way works fine ... but :
On a few cars with iron trans I did put an inline fine filter on cooler line and used the big buck atf . Seemed to be fine . 62 727 was that way stock , along with an inside filter . Also I do that on coaxial ps box , Do not want that to act up , or get wear junk back into ps pump .  Or replacing failed ps pump or trying old pump again . Sometimes hard to know what to do on that , but protection helps .
I appreciate and accept other’s opinions on all this , but did read about this fine filter / low temp issue in an SAE  article . In any case cleaner oil is always more better . Plus latest stuff probably better in many parameters  than that “red 10w oil”  But-to each his own .     All info helps...
Although details escape memory I remember reading too about some guy crossing F and GM atf to “ get better shifts” . One school likes smooth , one likes fast and solid . I love the 62  727 shift , solid kick down all that stuff . Can’t stand part throttle kick down “ they “improved it “ with . You could feel passing gear detent then , had control by your foot . Better ...

Just happened to buy a quart of power steering fluid this week at Advance Auto.

$5.49 for their store brand.  Pretty much the same price as ATF.

Yea... Leaky steering box in my '70 300... and yes, it was a red puddle from the previous owner(s) as they always seem to be. Maybe it makes a difference and maybe it doesn't.  It's really about my feelings anyway. It is 2020 and I can say that. LOL!!

Rebuilt Firm Feel box is in process as we speak to cure the leak.

Lubricants, Fuels, Coolants, additives, and etc. almost always bring out many opinions and experiences.
I'm adding my thoughts on your question of power steering fluid vs. automatic transmission fluid for use in power steering.

Both are essentially hydraulic oils, but they differ primarily by friction modifiers which are included in the ATF and are not needed in power steering systems. Friction modifiers improve clutch function by reducing (or eliminating) the tendency for clutch surfaces to "chatter" when relative speeds are nearing lock-up. Limited slip differentials are a well known source of such chatter when the friction modifier in the gear oil is either absent or depleted. The same kind of roughness in clutch engagement can occur in the automatic transmission if the friction modifier is not present. Some clutch slippage is necessary in the transmission to accomplish an acceptably smooth shift. A clutch that chatters is not acceptable.
The difference in the oils is not related to the needs of gaskets, seals, oil pumps, cylinders, bearings, and etc, but only to needs of the clutches and bands; therefore, use of ATF in the power system is perfectly acceptable..

Auto Zone prices are about: $6.00/quart for Dexron ATF and about $4.00/12oz for power steering fluid

It's my opinion that the only reason there are containers labeled "POWER STEERING FLUID" is to create an additional profitable sales item. I'm sure it makes some folks "feel good" to purchase a product that is indicated to be for the specific application.
