RE: [Chrysler300] Wiring Harness

Noel,

Thanks for the update. I know when I originally ordered my harnesses Greg wanted me to send him my old harness up front because of the issues with connectors. Unfortunately that was not possible for me as I wasn’t able to disable the car for that long. But I knew these sources would not last forever. I only got my car in 2016 and as soon as I did, I sold my ’70 Road Runner in order to buy stuff for the car. Even though I’m late to the game, I’m a long time lover of these cars and knew that there weren’t unlimited amounts of parts for them. I ordered everything I could and even with that I still missed out on some parts that were available in the past.

When I was a kid, my family used to build aircraft wiring harnesses in our driveway for drones that would be shot down by pilots in training. This was back when all the wires were white and we used to tie them with waxed nylon cording as zip ties hadn’t been invented yet. We had those large layout boards that you talk about and I certainly know how much work it was to get things just right.

It’s too bad nobody was able to save the layout boards. Probably never to created again as the supply of cars needing them dry up.

Nick.

First, Greg Leggatt says 'Hello' to all his 300 friends!

I just called and spoke with Greg. A few years ago, I knew he had tried to find someone to come up to his home and take his 30+ template boards that he created to make new harnesses, each custom made to the accessories a particular car was equipped with. And, some of the cars, like his 300-F that Claudio is inquiring about, took 3 harnesses - 1 for the instrument panel, 1 for the engine compartment, and one for the rear of the car. Greg and Sue were selling their home, and had no room to bring the boards with them. Greg said it would have taken a big box truck to have moved these boards..

Unfortunately, Greg said that no one expressed an interest, so he deposited all these templates into dumpsters and they're long gone. Greg went on to say that the biggest obstacle to creating these harnesses had been the cessation of production of the terminals he needed.. Back when he started fabricating these harnesses, he bought thousands of terminals, as well as special [expensive] crimper tools required to properly affix these terminals to the harness wires. Having run out of some of the terminals, he was able to source similar, though not exact, terminals manufactured by Delphi in Cleveland. Greg said that once Delphi shuttered its Cleveland plant and moved production down to Mexico, the quality of these substitute terminals worsened - they required much more force to plug the male ends into the female ends and, when trying to unfasten them, these terminal connections would always break. So this really drove him to end his long run of custom fabricating the replacement harnesses we need for our Letter Cars.

As John Grady just mentioned, it's best to try to use as much of your current harness as possible. Otherwise, as Greg mentioned to me this evening, it likely becomes a painstaking task of creating the connections wire by wire.
