Hi Don and others,

My 300C had a McCulloch VS57 Blower installed shortly after it was purchased from Sterling Motors in Billings . It was driven to Salt Lake City where the Blower was installed. I don’t think the carbs were pressurized. Harold Wilcoxson had the blower sent back to the factory twice for replacing the bearings. The  VS57 Models were suffering from quality control problems during manufacture, and was becoming increasingly expected to perform at and above its design speeds due to the higher capacity and higher  revving V8’s coming to market, as well as due to the requirements of racers. Our 300C was drag racing at the Belgrade, MT drag strip and many others in Montana. The 300C was timed  at 131 MPH at the Belgrade strip.

The 300C came from the factory with a 120 MPH speedometer and on the way to Salt Lake City it was driven over the 120. A new speedometer was ordered and it was a 1958 D 150 MPH. When I bought the 300C, I put the 120 back in the 300.

I have a correct 300C speedometer that I purchased many years ago from the Club, Inc. Two years ago I had the Sun Tachometer undated due to the mercury batteries are no longer manufactured. I had the shop test my 150 speedo and run up over 140 on their machine. It still worked and they oiled it. Some time I will install it In the 300C. I bought the 300C from Harold Wilcoxson July 19, 1958. My friend Harold usually bought two fast cars every year and raced them. He never married and cars were his hobby. Harold died at age 94 in Aug. 2017. When I still lived in Seattle, Harold would come to the Drag strips in the Seattle area and always came away the trophies. I feel very lucky that I knew Harold when he was in the Navy during the Korean War stationed at Bremerton, WA. Arlys and I have been to Livingston, MT many times to visit Harold and tour Yellowstone Park. The 300C ran perfectly at 11,000 foot  high pass on the NE entrance of Yellowstone as it has the high altitude Jets in the Carbs.

Hi Chuck,

I have a 300 E that had a McCulloch supercharger installed when new. The original owner was from RI and he bought the car at North Boulevard Motors in Great Neck NY. I wonder if the same person did the install? Any information you can give me would be welcome. I have no history on the car, as the original owner was deceased before I got the car. The blower was still on the car when I got it in 1994. I just got it on the road with just the 2 4 barrels. I’m getting the blower rebuilt.

Apropos of this topic, I have a car that in 1956 received what today we'd call a crate motor, from a 300B, engine #3NE562038.  The installation was done by renown builder Bill Frick on Long Island, NY.  It appears to be a stock motor to which Frick added a McCullogh VS57A blower.  I haven’t had it dyno’d or clocked but the power is quiet ample. 

 

If anyone wants to dive deeper I can send them photos. It is quite an installation, with a rather large custom air box surrounding the 2-4’s like I have never seen before.

Glad the mail came through. What I am referring to was basically an advert for superchargers and no additional info, proof or pictures. The result of supercharging the C-300 was however significant, and I believe it has been discussed before here.

I don't remember seeing a C300 with super chargers.

That would be interesting.

I remember Granitelli had a 300F with dual super chargers.

Granitelli owned Paxton at the time.

Anyone remember this advert from Paxton (McCullogh) Industries in around 1956, showing performance gains (0-60 timeslots etc) for various cars having had a Paxton supercharger added. The icing of the cake was a C-300 with twin Paxtons at the bottom of the list. If I remember correctly, this was advertised doing 0-60 in less than 7 seconds. Do anyone have a copy/scan of this advert that I can get a digital copy of? Trying to source it on the internet gives nothing, but I believe it has been published in the 300 fraternity before.
