Re: [Chrysler300] 1962 Speedo Cable Gear

ATF is really 10 weight oil with gear mesh related additives, and additives for close friction control for the discs and bands. . So yes. I like Mobil one even better as synthetics are extremely stable . Will still be oil in 100 years — not tar ..

When JC Auto repaired the tach for my G, I asked about lubrication for the drive cable.  I was told to use ATF, as it didn’t gum up and was good at low temps, so that’s what I did, and now I use it for speedo cables too.

Hi Matt

You said “lives on the end if the cable , “ which is one gear ; then you said “transmission side “ which from words used I take  it is the one inside the tailshaft   . People here are talking about the one that pulls out I think ...

by the way , graphite lube seems not to work well imho long term , causes  drag , noise and gear failure and speedo jump . I string  it up ( whole  cable ) and  run   Mobil 10-30 down it leave hanging a week . No more problems . Like white grease , a lot of these things I think are marketing scams ; no doubt the Mobil picks up some graphite , but oil won’t get hard.

For non believers , why the noise , jumping and worn gears.. ?? “  Lubed with graphite.  “. Also bearing fitting at speedo head inlet crucial to keep oiled (not grease )  ; factory grease there turns to tar ..

Yes,  JC auto did help me out about 8 years ago with a used gear for my 300G, and I was most appreciative.  The question was about reproduction gears, and they are not being made to my knowledge.  I’m currently looking for an 18 tooth for my ’65 Barracuda project and not found any.

Hi,

Somewhere stored away, I have a pack of several gears with different teeth that I obtained years ago for my 300E.  I'll try to find them.

I have not found any reproduction Mopar speedo gears for anything 1965 and older.  If anyone has, please let us all know.  The only thing out there is used and maybe NOS, but good luck finding it.

The plastic gear that lives on the end of the Speedometer Cable (transmission side, of course) has some wear to the gear splines.

Anyone making those little gears?

My 1962 300 has a 150 mph speedometer & 15" wheels.

Forgot what the rear end gear ratio is.

Thanks
