Documenting gas fills, oil changes, all service work and maintenance is something I used to do as well with my cars and boats, then one day I just stopped. I still keep most of my receipts for parts in a file and it goes with a car if I sell it. I've yet to buy a classic car that hasn't come with at least a few receipts from the past and it isn't unusual for there to be service notes in the back of the original owners manuals, often filled out by dealerships or by the proud new owner to document service for the first few years. Service invoices will usually note mileage and a date, if you can put enough of them together you can often prove mileage at given points in time. If I were dishonest and was trying to convince a buyer that a car was original mileage when I knew it wasn't, I would 'lose' any documentation that might disprove my claims. 

Without paper documentation, I'd be looking at common wear areas like ball joints, bushings, paint blemishes, hinge pins, pedal pads and seat bolster wear. The seat wear and pedal pads are difficult though as they will wear differently depending on the type of use a car gets and the size of the primary driver. For instance a 120 lb driver using the car for long commutes on highways would wear much different than a 275 lb driver doing short city driving and getting in and out a lot. The tires are a good reference in this case, especially if you can prove when the tires were produced or discontinued production.

Nice looking car that doesn’t appear to have gone around the clock. One general trick for any car is to look at the amount of wear on the brake pedal and driver seat...

I have two cars that I have had for 20 years and I still have every receipt for work done. I may be weird, but I also keep a small note book in my cars which I write the date, fuel and mileage every time I fill up. 20 years of history at a glance. Didn’t the seller offer any such proof?

That said, I bought a “classic” car last year that the owner gave me no previous receipts. It showed about 30,000 miles which was obviously wrong for a ’65 model. However, it didn’t seem like a 130,000 mile car. It was restored and converted to right hand drive here in Australia 25 years ago and I suspect the odometer was “zeroed” at the time which was a practice sometimes done back then. I could believe it had only travelled 30,000 miles in the last 25 years. I have also had odometers stop on me before. So who knows what its real mileage is – but does it matter? I know the condition of the car and I’m happy with it. Apart from the tyres, it looks like you got a good car there as well!

Can you guys help me understand how I can verify the mileage on my 300L?

I was told it was original & there’s no reason for me to doubt this gentleman, but I would feel much better telling people this cars mileage is original if I can document it.

I found the build sheet behind the back seat under the springs & the car certainly appears original including original bias-ply tires that are 30 years old & not restored, except for new mufflers & tailpipes.
