Agree with Marshall 100% , they can work fine , did in the day . Silicone honestly probably better tech and covers go on and off easy . But appearance an issue ; depends on goal for your car.
In every case on difficult recurring leaks the valve cover is deformed due to gross over-tightening . Puts an inward bend at bolt , can never seal. You absolutely must use a torque wrench exactly to spec and touch up over time if seeping    .
You can flatten cover again on a flat surface plate small wood block and easy use of hammer ; some advocate using small ball peen in bolt hole the other way and second hammer to remove downward deformed ring shape at bolt . Do not over tighten or do “by feel “ .. gets car all dirty underneath too , runs  down bell housing looks like trans issues. 
I personally put thin rtv on cover side — hope gasket —if cork — stays with cover .. fill small imperfections too .
