Re: [Chrysler300] Fwd: 300 F Generator for Sale?

Mark,
If you don't get your generator issue resolved, you may want to pull the generator and regulator from your F and bring them to our Meet. John Grady will be there and may offer his further diagnosis.
Just a thought.

Hi Mark,

Most likely a short in field wire(the smaller one from F on generator, to something else , can put generator on full force all the time , ---if it burned while driving, carefully check harness from generator to regulator and the terminals at the ends are ok, on straight , not bent , and not touching anything , or grounded . Also that "under" nuts on the terminals are tight, before you put on wires, which centers the terminal bolts in the insulated holes. That harness gets beat up . A short like that on F wire that can hurt regulator too. Did you see ammeter pegged to C on the way home? Or excessively bright lights? If need be look under regulator, two open wire wound resistors there , one might one burned up and obviously open in middle if a short happened

The second thing is the "reverse current relay or "cutout" , one of the three relays in the voltage regulator. If "polarization" of generator lost, long story, (but have to do that with a new generator), look on line, do EXCATLY what it says. You can blow regulator by screwing that up,. Mechanics sometimes say "Oh I know how, then go at it to wrong terminals regulator is toast. . That cutout relay can stick shut when you stop the car. Then battery runs backwards into generator, tries to make it a motor, but it cannot turn stopped 413 motor.. This will cause the ammeter to go way over to D (discharge) and stay there with the car off....it burns up generator sitting still. It also kills battery in an hour or so. Usual cause is someone has the VR open, presses down the cutout relay with a finger. It will lock itself down and burn out generator. Problem is the finger, not the regulator.

Look inside gen see what burned, armature or field? Half of the gen may be ok. Also clue as to what happened . I think all 30-35 A generators from any 56 to 61 mopar fit. If non AC car. AC different. If you do not know why it fried --and you put on a new one it might burn up too.

Let us know...

All the shop can think of is that what they can think of and there’s never a connection to what they were doing. Oh well. Going to get that one rebuilt but maybe there’s a chance someone has one out there ready to go.
