Re: [Chrysler300] Tires now buying them

P225/75R15 typical OD is 28.25 in +/- Tread Width is roughly 5.6 in

P235/75R15 typical OD is 28.75 in +/- Tread Width is roughly 6.0 in

Actuals will vary by tire brand and model - for example P235/75R15 Cooper Trendsetter SE is 28.55 while Toyo Extensa A/S is 28.97 and Nexen AH5 and Hankook H724 fall inbetween. These are my measurements of actual new tires mounted on 15x6 wheel at 32 psi taken by measuring circumference and dividing by Pi - they are close to manufacturer's spec sheets (28.65 in for Cooper and 28.9 in for other 3)

Actual Tread width (a difficult measure on rounded corners) on the same P235/75R15 range from 5.75 on Hankook H724 to 6.25 on Toyo Extensa A/S (Cooper 6.0, Nexen 5.9)

If you have had tire rub issues in the past, there are 3 dimensions that will influence this - 1. Tire Diameter, 2. Tread Width, and 3. Wheel Offset. Probably biggest potential issue is wheel offset with non-stock wheels (particularly those available today) but combination of diameter and tread width can also generate rub

Assuming you originally had 14 inch tires on a 1964 300K, most likely it was 8.50-14. Non-letter may have been 8.00-14 and Option may have been 9.00-14. But for purpose of this discussion, I will assume 8.50-14. This size was replaced in 1965 with 8.55-14 but dimensions were close according to old data.

I have a NOS Goodyear Double Eagle mounted on 14x6 at 32 psi which measures 28.1 in OD with Tread Width of 5.4 inches.

To me best choice (closest match to 8.50-14 OE dimensions) would be the P225/75R15 - less chance of tire rub and closer speedometer accuracy. But less selection in whitewall than the P235/75R15 unless you go with Diamondback. As far as I know the only 2 "name brand" P225/75R15 are Nexen AH5 (Korea) and Hankook H724 (Korea or Indonesia) - both of which appear to be good quality compared to Chinese made options. And both Hankook and Nexen tires are used on Original Equipment by major US manufacturers (though not these models). Other no-name tires may exist but I would stay away from Chinese made tires - the only ones I have seen (Milestar if I recall correctly?) were really thin and wimpy and just did not feel right.

I have asked before about finding the tires I want on my black 1964 K convert, I currently have wire wheels with 235/70/15R 7/8 white walls, I'm' asking the group for input, the car is not stock, so that's not an issue, I'm down to two choices 235/75/15R white wall 1.6 or 225/75/15R .5-1.00. Had some wheel drag on right front in the past, turning right backing down a steep driveway. I have seen the 1.6 on a 1965 Cadillac convert and it looks great. The tire prices very a lot, but the look is important to me and I do not want extra wide white walls of the fifties on it. Thanks for reading this. Buy the way I won a award at my towns classic car show this summer, first time out.
