Michael -
What your quote refers to is facebook 'Like' buttons on
other websites, such as weather.com, amazon.com etc.

They "may" indeed be tracking users who simply log in.
They definitely track users who use the "LIKE" function. Perhaps it doesn't
even require actual use of the LIKE function...
'In November 2015 the government of Belgium demanded
that Facebook cease from collecting personal information from everyone
visiting websites containing a Facebook 'like' button, regardless of whether
they [even] had Facebook accounts."

Actually, if you are logged in to facebook, which is
what you have to do in order to use the site, then they may be tracking what
you do on the internet. Has nothing to do with the Like button.

Be forewarned...
For those who aren't aware, or as a reminder to
those who are aware -- if you use the "LIKE" function on
Facebook: this is what enables Facebook to track your movements,
destinations, etc. across the Internet. They then sell that information to
other businesses.

If Don's post had been done on Facebook, I would “like” it.
The club already has a face book page. Also, a lot of us are out
dated dinosaurs that like outmoded cars and other stuff. There are not
that many messages on the 300 list server, just hit un-subscribe if
you can’t handle the delete button.

A forum link on our website would be one option. Another
would be a usable Facebook page. Just sayin’.

Okay, Hugh -- how about posting what the
alternative Internet program/application is you propose the club could
use?

Yet another reason
why all users shouldn’t have to (involuntarily) receive every email
sent to the group on every subject… Yahoo Groups is an
outmoded method of communicating among enthusiasts.
Thanks-
Yahoo has been trying
to keep their system-wide hack under cover for months - it was
revealed only in the last two weeks that they had hackers in their
system.
I believe my ff-guy account is fixed now but
I'm changing Passwords on every account I've got. It is my
understanding that several million accounts were
hacked.
There appear to be interesting and subtle
differences between the messages.
Mine had a subject line of “Favor” and
said:
Can you do me a favor
please
There was no link, my first name did not
appear and JL’s name and address on the “From” line were his
standard issue. Maybe special treatment for men named
John?
I did open the email but nothing
happened. Perhaps my virus filters stripped something out or
John’s list went to different hackers with differing
MO’s.
Thanks for sharing. I needed to raise my
paranoia level.
On reflection, it is nice to drive a nice old
lettercar that requires me to have at least one hand on the wheel,
contains no nanny or black box, does not have a “Check Engine light”
and is not subject to hacking or tracking. It’s computers are
pretty much analog-TorqueFlite, distributor, alternator regulator,
carbs, relays, switches, circuit breakers, remote-boosted power
brakes, shocks & etc.
We need to french fry whoever did this
stuff..
The text seemed aborted on repetition/ forwarding -
that worries me. As if it was somehow preventing exposing the
words used.
What it said was ; "John, can you do me a
favor?,
John L "
So customized, brief, not a generic
plea. Most of us would open that?
Then , upon
opening, it went to the scam about sick relatives in
foreign countries.
I am well aware of this kind of thing,
not stupid, but the first email was ,to me very sophisticated??
played on someone who in fact respects John a lot,---I paused
briefly-- and then thought "he needs something about
300's" .
What a slime ball. French fry till a toasty
critter.

As I
understand it, a hacker steals an e-mail list, then sends the
same message to all on the stolen list to confirm the address is
still in service and of some value to someone somewhere. Then the
hacker puts a million addresses or so on storage media and
peddles them around the world. The first victim will never know
their list was stolen until someone tells them. Recipients that
delete before opening are slightly better off as their e-mail
address won't be on this particular list. In this case there did
not appear to be any pictures or attachments that might have a
virus to plant on the recipient's computer.
Don't blame John or
block his pretty cool e-mail address. He has much knowledge and
experience to share.
I'm kinda of a French fry guy
myself.
