As I understand it, a hacker steals an e-mail list, then sends the same message to all on the stolen list to confirm the address is still in service and of some value to someone somewhere. Then the hacker puts a million addresses or so on storage media and peddles them around the world. The first victim will never know their list was stolen until someone tells them. Recipients that delete before opening are slightly better off as their e-mail address won’t be on this particular list. In this case there did not appear to be any pictures or attachments that might have a virus to plant on the recipient’s computer. Don’t blame John or block his pretty cool e-mail address.
