Ha, yeah. My G was sold new in California so it has the optional PCV valve setup, which gives you a convenient vacuum nipple on the balance tube to hook up your vacuum gauge. I do see a threaded plug on balance tubes that don't have it - not sure if it's all of them. If you do have the plug you could buy a nipple to screw into it for tuning. A bit of a hassle, but after struggling with carb tuning for years once I started using the vacuum gauge the crossram is kind of a set-it-and-forget-it deal, so you wouldn't have to do it very often.
John, Andy, Where do you connect the vacuum guage(s)? Do you need a unisyn (sp?) to do this? Sounds good to me..19.5, almost 20 as A&G mentioned. I do the same thing, Andy…it works!! I have big 6” vacuum gauge off an old Sun test stand..you can really see what is going on. Once you do that , you realize how futile adjusting the ram mixture screws by listening etc is . The Golden screwdriver does not work. Why the needles are often “ringed” half way down the taper from thousands of adjustments. I may have mentioned before but Edelbrock needles are slightly different taper , and of heavier construction--- they fix that problem with worn needles really well . I think they contact inside the carb body at a new place. Whatever---- it fixes “the needles don’t change anything” syndrome . They fit right in. Look at your needles..if obvious wear rings around what is supposed to be a smooth taper, they turn on and off abruptly as worn part seats, , drives you crazy…
I have one 1961 Chrysler Tune-Up chart - source unknown - that says all engines 19.5" at idle. That's the only place I've ever seen a number. Works for me, I tune my carbs with a vacuum gauge. No, I have no idea what the vacuum is.

Do you know idle vacuum , Dave?
I think how it works is known, it is at what vacuum does it come out? I wonder too. Ram vacuum always seemed kind of marginal, the can under fender, PB issues etc

They are spring loaded to override the low vacum at idle
Vacum drops, the spring "bumps" up the idle, like when you are at a stoplight w/the brakes applied and/or the A/C running.
Mine works fine, just the way it should.

Does not sound right to me.I remember seeing it move in and out a bit without touching the linkage long ago when engine was hot and idling, (they often lope a bit normaly?) So whatever a ram car idles at normally (vacuum) moves it actively , gap held between end and linkage .

Group,
We would very much like to hear what you other cross ram folks have working in your cars.
Does it normally take 20 inches to even begin to move that dash pot finger and even more to do the job that it is supposed to do (assuming it is adjusted correctly)?
Some engines don't even have that much vacuum???
Thanks for any experiences on this subject.
Allan & Gloria
