Re: [Chrysler300] known car 8403 156821

Jim and All,

I know I've seen the data plate on an F on the A pillar more than once, at the top in the door opening, just like on both of my 1961 300 Gs.

Does anyone know if they were put in both places? Does it depend on where the car was built? I know like on the 1956 DeSoto, some data plates are on the firewall and some are on the splash pan ahead of the radiator. I had heard that the variation depends on whether the car was built in Los Angeles or Detroit.

There is an F convert listed in Auction America's July auction out in California that shows the data plate. It's painted black but coded WW1 for a white car. Still a nice looking car.

Do any of you F owners have any information? Now I'm curious.

This is how these 'made' cars get laundered, either by deception or ignorance. What started out as a conversion eventually becomes real after a number of auction and private sales. Even if you prove to him that it's fabricated, he would likely continue to advertise it as a convertible because he has too much into it.

Another reason why our club is so important.

Just out of curiosity (and because I hate to see people taken advantage of), I emailed the seller and asked if this was a convertible which came from the factory that way, or if it had been a hardtop which was made into a convertible.  He replied it was a "true convertible."  He did mention that they bought it from a collection, and it was restored when they bought it (because I had also asked when it was restored, and how many miles since).

So, perhaps he doesn't know, or maybe there is confusion regarding whether this is that BJ car, but he's representing it as the real deal.  As others said, it would be best to proceed with caution.

This car was at the 1998 Barrett Jackson auction where I saw it in person. The owner was near by and told me that only 4 F terra cotta convertibles were made in 1960, and that this was likely the only one left. When I reported to the Group, several persons sent me emails saying that this was not true and that they personally had a terra cotta F convertible.

The color is described in the auction as terra cotta, but it is not even close (I have an F hardtop in terra cotta so I know first hand what this color looks like). It is more of a mauvish red color. The color is not too far from the 1961 Chrysler dubonnet color; remember the color of John Hertog's 1961 Newport hardtop?

Even worse, it has an 842 body code (for an F two door hardtop), not an 845 body code for an F convertible. When it went across the auction block, BJ said that it was a "made car". It did not meet the reserve and did not sell at that auction.

Buyer beware -- for sure!!
